It's been three years since we last caught the incredible LP and they were finally able to make it to the Bay Area after rescheduling their current tour four times due to the pandemic. LP's latest release, Churches, was appropriately named considering the Fox Theater was jammed with a congregation who was absolutely devoted to the singer/songwriter.

The show was a huge step forward compared to the first time we caught them back in 2018 at the Independent. This time around, LP surrounded herself with a four-piece band and a stellar lighting rig that was made up of about 5 spotlights at the back of the stage that created some great silhouette moments and added an ambiance that I don't recall from the last couple of times we've seen LP. But most impressive of all, was LP's souring vocals and the way they interacted with the audience. LP was having a blast and it was obvious with the smile that stretched nearly ear-to-ear. For a good chunk of the night, I couldn't tell if I was listening to LP or the audience around me more. This was essentially a 90-minute sing-along and the energy was reciprocal between the band and assembled congregation.
Some of my personal highlights of the night included LP's harmonica solo during "Strange" and I loved how "Muddy Waters" slowly crescendo'd over the course of the song building up to a soaring guitar solo at the end with LP banging her tambourine into the drum kit's cymbals.

"Rainbow" was also a slow build that started with just LP and the guitarist on an acoustic, as the second chorus hit, both the bassist and drummer joined in and the song sounded fantastic. "Churches" followed, and was even more stripped down with only LP on an acoustic guitar and back-lit with 3 of the 5 spotlights from the back of stage.
Nick Leng, who opened the show, joined LP for "My Body" and got those in the audience who weren't already dancing, even more excited. But shortly after "My Body", LP paused the show for a medical intervention for at least one woman in the front row, who after being escorted out of the pit, seemed to be suffering from dehydration. The show resumed after the 10-minute break and while LP initially sat at the edge of the stage for staff to arrive, once they did, LP grabbed a few phones from the audience and took a few selfies to pass the time and reassured fans by saying "you're safe here".

Ultimately, the biggest sing-along of the night was saved for LP's last song, "Lost on You". The crowd simply went nuts. Between those singing and dancing, LP belted out the vocals and just barely stayed above the crowd's singing. What a super group of fans for a super artist. Don't miss LP when they come back to the Bay Area, and hopefully we won't have to wait another three years!
