Review - Kim Petras @ the Fox Theater (10/26/19)

Kim Petras may not be a household name just yet, but the pop singer's making quite the name for herself after a recent media blitz these past few months to support the June release of her new album, Clarity (Spotify). Her stop in Oakland was only the fourth on her current Clarity Tour and found her hosting what turned out to be one of the biggest Halloween parties in the city at the Fox Theater last night. The assembled crowd came ready, wearing all sorts of costumes and outfits that I simply don't have the vocabulary to describe. Kim's catchy club hits are impressive, but even more so is the fact that she's skyrocketed up the pop charts all while releasing her music independently over the past few years.

DJ Alex Chapman spun dance-floor anthems to get the crowd warmed up for nearly an hour before Kim took the stage just after 9pm. She was joined onstage by another DJ who was perched on a riser towards the right and an impressive array of lights spanned the width of the stage behind them. On the left, a circular rotating riser would host Kim later in the set when she wasn't working the front of the stage and engaging with her fans down front.

Besides the stage theatrics, every few songs Kim would take a break to change outfits which I've heard were all custom designed pieces just for the tour. She later joked saying "Halloween is like Christmas for gays" which had the crowd erupt into cheering, and she thanked the crowd for coming out for the occasion.

Clearly, Kim's embracing her moment in the spotlight and this tour will certainly reinforce her climb up the charts.
