Shakey Graves closed out the first leg of his US tour last night at the reinvigorated August Hall, the historic theatre originally built in the 1890's and was last known as the trendy dance spot, Ruby Skye. The hall opened just five weeks ago, and is already one of the gems of San Francisco's live music scene. Named after the 1890's original architect, August Headman, the newly revamped hall features state of the art sound and lights -- although the band preferred to stay largely in the dark last night.

Amazingly, this past weekend saw Shakey Graves travel from Napa's Bottlerock Festival on Friday night, to the Sasquatch Festival at the Gorge in Washington state on Saturday, and then return back to SF for the show last night to a capacity crowd of 750 people. Kudos to the bus driver for the circuitous route from Napa to San Francisco!
Luckily, the band was able to relax a bit after arriving earlier in the day and supposedly hit the new bowling lanes in the remodeled speakeasy just below the venue. The band went on at 9:45pm after a short set by The Aces, and played until just about 11:15pm.

There weren't any signs of exhaustion and the 3-piece backing band sounded great behind one of Austin's most talented singer/songwriters with his unique gravelly Americana vocals and bluesy-rock guitar style. Promoting the May 4th release of his new album, Can't Wake Up(iTunes), nearly half of the show was comprised of new material while still mixing in crowd favorites, and closing the full-band set with "Dearly Departed".
Now the band has a couple of weeks off before embarking on the second leg that will take them all over the rest of the continental US. Check out his tour dates here if you live outside the Bay Area.
