The musicianship on display last night at the
Mountain Winery was beyond words as both
Béla Fleck & the Flecktones and Chick Corea's Elektric Band played for nearly 3 hours to a crowd that lapped up every twang of the banjo, slap on the fretless, space gadget finger tap, and harmonica slide -- and that was only sounds from the Flecktones! Corea's band was made up of the more traditional piano, guitar, bass, drums and saxophone, but both bands were on top form throughout the night!

The Flecktones kicked off the night with "Big Country"
(iTunes) -- one of my personal faves -- and no better way to start the evening, which then consisted of other classics like "Life in Eleven"
(iTunes) and "The Sinister Minister"
(iTunes) interspersed with solos from each member of the band. Béla dedicated his to
Glen Campbell who passed away on August 8th.

Bassist extraordinaire, Victor Wooten (Photo: Kevin Keating) |
As a former amateur bass guitarist myself, the highlight of the night was truly Victor's man handling of his basses. From his left hand roaming all over the fretless neck of his bass pictured above, to his slapping skills, to even flipping his bass around his body and not missing a note in the process. The guy is simply a master of the bass.

Chick Corea's Elektric Band weren't slouches either as they complimented Chick's piano skills. Chick was joined by John Patitucci on bass, Frank Gambale on guitar, Eric Marienthal on saxophone and drummer, Dave Weckl.
The two bands came back together at the end of the night for the encore which capped off a spectacular night! What a treat!
