John Mayer returned to
Shoreline last night, not even two months after his last appearance on June 3rd with Dead and Company. This time though, he was there to support his new album,
The Search for Everything (iTunes).

Mayer's set kicked off just before 9pm with a 5-song set with his full 7-piece backing band which he framed as the nights' first 'chapter'. 'Chapter 2' was a stripped down acoustic set which featured one of his biggest hits, "Daughters," along with a Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty cover.

Personally, the most interesting part of the evening was 'Chapter 3', which showcased the John Mayer Trio comprised of John Mayer and two of the most talented session musicians in the world: Steve Jordan on drums and Pino Palladino on bass guitar. Neither are household names, but their résumés speak volumes. Steve started his career as a drummer for Stevie Wonder, before touring with The Blues Brothers in the early 80's and then landed the gig for David Letterman's Late Night before Anton Fig took over in 1986. Pino's best known for taking up the bass guitar with The Who after the passing of John Entwistle, but has also toured, recorded or played with some of the biggest names in music: David Gilmour, John Legend, Phil Collins, Melissa Etheridge, Nine Inch Nails... The list goes on!

John's arguably known as more of a singer-songwriter, but he was able to show off the strength of his guitar playing as part of the Trio, which IMHO, didn't play long enough. But the majority of the largely female crowd was clearly there to hear John's more radio friendly hits. So the full band was brought back for 'Chapter 4' where for the remainder of the night, John mixed up new tunes before ending on crowd pleasers "Waiting on the World to Change" and "Gravity".
