The Cure played to a capacity crowd at the Shoreline Amphitheater this past Wednesday evening (5/26) and performed tracks across at least 15 albums spanning their 40 year career. The band consisted of Robert Smith (vocals/guitar), Simon Gallup (bass), Jason Cooper (drums), Roger O'Donnell (keyboards), and legendary guitarist, Reeves Gabrels, a longtime collaborator with David Bowie and member of Tin Machine.

Personally, I've never been a huge fan of the Cure, and this was the first time I've seen them perform live. But I walked away from the show with a greater respect for the band, and was simply blown away that the show was at full capacity with approx. 21,000 in attendance.

Don't get me wrong, I've always appreciated Robert Smith and The Cure -- they were pioneers in early goth alt rock and have built an extremely loyal fan base over the years -- but personally, I always needed something just a little bit harder, with a little more edge. That said, their show was truly impressive. I'm still blown away that 21,000 fans filled the amphitheater! Where were these people back in the 80's and 90's?

The one thing that struck me most throughout the night was the fact that it seemed like the main set was essentially a greatest hits, and the encore's featured (for the most part) the deep tracks and b-sides. Don't expect much chit-chat from Robert in between songs too. If he did speak, I can't remember a single thing he said. And besides Simon, the rest of the band was motionless throughout the night. But overall, an impressive show and one to catch when they come to your town!
